If trauma can be passed down through generations
so can healing
What is Generational Trauma?
Generational trauma is when the effects of trauma are passed down from one generation to the next. This can happen when children or grandchildren of people who went through serious hardships — such as poverty, abuse, neglect, and discrimination — carry the emotional and psychological scars from those experiences.
The effects of generational trauma can manifest in various ways, including:
Psychological Effects
Individuals may experience anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues as a result of passed down trauma.
Cultural Impact
In some cases, generational trauma affects cultural practices and identities, impacting how communities relate to their history and traditions.
Behavioral Patterns
Trauma can influence family dynamics and behavioral patterns, sometimes leading to cycles of abuse or dysfunction.
Health Impacts
There can be long-term physical health effects linked to the stress and anxiety associated with trauma. Such as obesity, heart disease and cancer.

Trauma can be transmitted to future generations through:
Family Narratives
Family narratives can transmit generational trauma by embedding stories of past hardships, losses, or unresolved pain into the family identity. These shared narratives shape how individuals perceive themselves and the world, often reinforcing trauma-related beliefs and behaviors across generations.
Parenting & Caregiving Styles
Parenting & caregiving styles can pass down generational trauma by perpetuating patterns of behavior, emotional responses, and coping strategies that parents themselves learned from their own trauma. These patterns may unintentionally reinforce cycles of stress, fear, or neglect, passing unresolved issues onto the next generation.
Epigenesis
Epigenesis is the process by which the environment influences genetic expression.
Generational trauma alters how genes are expressed in response to traumatic experiences. These changes can be passed down to future generations, potentially influencing stress responses, mental health, and vulnerability to trauma-related conditions.
It didn't start with you, but it can end with you.

How do you break the cycle of generational trauma?
Therapy creates a safe environment from which individuals can explore how past trauma affects their present lives; develop coping strategies; and work through feelings of anxiety, depression, or anger. This exploration helps individuals to break free from negative behavior cycles and fosters resilience while also reducing conflict and improving communication and understanding within families.
Coaching helps parents & caregivers to gain the tools and insight needed to foster a healthier, more connected relationship with their children. Coaching focuses on growth and goal-setting by helping caregivers identify harmful patterns and create actionable plans to build healthier habits. By emphasizing strengths and future possibilities, coaching empowers parents & caregivers to take control of their care giving, leading to increased self-esteem and reduced feelings of overwhelm and helplessness.
Education raises awareness about generational trauma and its effects — including the impact on the developing brain. This awareness can lead to healthier communication, stronger relationships, and informed choices that promote healing and break the cycle of trauma.
Therapy, coaching and education help to reduce symptoms, increase resiliency and coping skills, improve family relationships and mitigate long-term effects by healing generational trauma and empowering futures.
